 October 16 - A judge in a Kentucky court is set to make an important decision that will determine the course of online gambling in the state, and possibly in the rest of the world.
Governor Steve Beshear has been granted permission in an earlier ruling to take over the domain names of 141 gambling sites, many of them the favorite haunts of online slots players. A new court ruling that will officially seal the fate of these sites is to be heard this week, and internet slots sites are waiting with baited breath to discover the outcome.
Many in the online gambling industry, as well as those who are not connected with gambling at all, are worried that a ruling in favor of Beshear will set a frightening precedent for other states and countries to take over domain names of any internet sites with whom they cross swords, or simply because they don't agree with their mission statements.
Some of the domain name registrars are already cooperating with the state of Kentucky, and have turned over lists of all domains under their management. One of the largest to do so is Godaddy, which handed over the names of sites such as Doyles Room and Ultimate Bet, even before an official ruling was passed.
However, other groups are angrily protesting the process and have vowed to fight the decision right until the end. Network Solutions, one of the biggest domain registrars in the world, has sent representatives to Judge Wingate's courtroom in order to argue in defense of the company's right to protect the domain names of all online slots and casino companies with which it works.
The Kahnawake Gaming Commission has also come out with a strong statement against the takeover attempts.
