Internet Slots Games Given Ultimatum Down South - 08-07-08

August 7 - When internet slots games replaced outlawed video poker games at a wide number of locations across the state of North Carolina, the governor felt that he needed to step in once again and do away with this 'evil'.

Governor Mike Easly signed another law this week that essentially bans these internet slot games. Convenience store owners, restaurateurs and truck stop operators have until December 1st of this year to do away with the games or face prosecution.

Law enforcement organizations justify their moves saying: "We get an awful lot of complaints from the public as far as 'My father, my spouse, they're taking their entire retirement check and spending it in Location A on these poker machines.'"

However, many in North Carolina are of the opinion that authorities are clamping down on these internet-based machines because the state wants to hang on to its monopoly of the state lottery. Ironically, electronic games, including slots games, are allowed at the Cherokee run Harrah's in the state.

Tom Morgan, President of Mountain Energy was particularly angry at the law. "It appears to me that state legislators want everyone to either buy a lottery ticket or go to Harrah's," he said.

The internet slots games have proved popular among the local population. Players access the games through a computer terminal that is linked to the internet in the store or truck stop, after purchasing a pre paid phone card over the counter. The 'loophole' in the law is that players can win a sweepstake by purchasing the phone card and by playing a slots game on the computer terminal, players can reveal their cash prizes.

As noted by a local Democrat politician: "They found a loophole in the video poker law to reintroduce this similar type of gaming."
