 October 1 - A judge on Friday granted a short reprieve to 141 online gambling sites after attempts were made by the Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear to take over their domain names. Beshear has so far been successful in his fight to grab these domains in a bid to clean the state from online gambling "blood suckers."
By Friday's court hearing, a number of online gambling sites were fearing the worst, and many of them had managed to secure alternative domain names for themselves in case the judge voted in favor of Beshear. Full Tilt Poker had purchased fulltilt.com and was making plans to have the new domain forward to its main url until further notice.
After listening to the case, Judge Thomas Wingate decided to convene the hearing until October 7th in order to give each side to present their briefs. This news was greeted with satisfaction by the vast number of online gambling proponents who have been viewing this case worryingly as things developed over the past week.
The Interactive Gaming Council (IGC) and the Poker Players Alliance (PPA), groups which represent a significant portion of the online gambling industry, were close at hand to provide press statements and commentaries on the hearing.
The Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association (iMEGA) is another organization that has been intensely involved in this case and, after the judge granted a continuance on Friday, the group's President, Ed Leyden hurried to issue a statement. "I have a good feeling about our motion," he said. "Judge Wingate is a very straightforward, common sense judge and a thoughtful guy, so we are in good hands."
Online gambling sites are trying to share Leyden's optimism and - on the exterior - put on a confident front about the future. But behind the scenes, there has been much shuffling around in search of alternative domain names in case Beshear is true to his word and manages to eradiate online gambling from 'his' state.
